Short history of the project
My
name is Leonid V. Khramov. I'm from St. Petersburg, Russia. I began
to develop X Northern Captain in December 1995, because there was
no orthodox graphical
X file manager for Linux. And i like such kind of file managers.
There are many popular ones for windows platform, such as Windows
Commander and Norton Commander.
So where was I? Ooh, i started to write xnc as a small project
only for my usage, i wanted to make navigation through file system
easier and more visual.
First two versions were only for my internal use, and then suddenly
i gained access to internet and decided to share my small piece
of software with other people. I wanted to know that did anybody
except me need such kind of software? That was 3.0 version of XNC.
I received a lot of e-mails with criticism and congratulations,
and i continued my work of improving xnc. As the result of this
development i added Virtual File System support to file manager
and taught it to read many types of archives. Also i added many
features that make your life easier and help you to have information
on your fingers. That war 4.0 version.
This version contained many additions to the interface and xnc
setup tool that allows you to tune colors, fonts and hot keys for
xnc. I prefer working with keyboard, so xnc was oriented to work
with it, any function in xnc can be assigned to the hot key you
like.
Since the 4.0 version there was a long period of time while i have
no time to develop xnc, only a couple of hours per month. XNC is
my hobby, not my work so time is always a limit. But anyway, i continued
to develop it and added FTP support to VFS. That was 4.4 version.
Now i added many features requested from users, you can find them
on 'What's new' page, reorganized the code
and slightly changed visual appiarence of xnc.
So enjoy it and mail me your oppinion.
Best regards,
